The Tamil Nadu police have arrested a Government school teacher under five criminal sections including the Prevention of Atrocities Against SC/STs Act after a video of him brutally assaulting a student emerged.
A student in a government-run boys school in Tamil Nadu’s Chidambaram district was brutally assaulted by the teacher, who teaches Physics for the senior grade at students at the Nandhanar Government Boys School, for being late to one of the sessions.
Here’s What Happened
A video of M Subramanian, the accused teacher, brutally assaulting a boy inside a government school classroom in front of his classmates in Tamil Nadu’s Cuddalore district on Wednesday went viral on social media.
The incident, which took place at the Government Nandanar Boys Higher Secondary School near Chidambaram, was filmed by a classmate of the class 12 student. The teacher punished the student allegedly for skipping an earlier class.
Punishment to Male Student
The student was made to kneel and the teacher held his hair and continuously beat him up with a stick. Despite the student’s pleas that he would not repeat the mistake, the teacher went on lashing and kicking him.
In the video, the teacher is also seen flogging the student with a wooden cane.
Police Complaint & Social Media Uproar
The student had approached the police station and submitted the video evidence, after which the teacher was taken into custody.
The student sustained injuries on the thighs, and was admitted to the Rajah Muthaiah Medical College and Hospital at Chidambaram. As reported by The Hindu, based on a complaint from the student, the police booked a case against the teacher under:
- Section 294 (b) (uttering obscenities)
- Section 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt)
- Section 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means)
- Section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act, read with the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act
Several handles on social media shared this video expressing their outrage. While the arrest happened on October 15, 2021, subsequently, National Commission for Child Protection Rights (NCPCR) also issued a notice on October 17, 2021 to the district collector, demanding an action report within seven days.
Tamil Nadu had earlier allowed schools to admit students from class 9-12 into class, with the necessary precautions. Recently, the Government allowed students starting from Class II to attend school, subject to clearances and pandemic-mitigation measures of the schools.
After this video, several Men have spoken up about the atrocities and thrashings they faced during their school days. MDO will do a fresh article on the same soon. This incident also reminds us of another case reported from Punjab in December 2019, where a male student was humiliated by female teacher, after which he died by suicide.
Sadly, we see almost negligible outrage on such cases in social media, which society as a whole, only prefers to speak up for girls/women. Read Punjab Case Below.
