On Friday, the Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Arun Mishra issued notice to the Centre and other state governments on PIL referring to increase in number of ‘child suicides’. The petition demanded a direction to central and state government to come up with a ‘Public Health Plan’ implementation in their respective jurisdiction provided under Sec 29 and Sec 115 of the Mental Healthcare Act 2017.
Gaurav Kumar Bansal, is a practicing advocate and the petitioner in this case. His PIL stated,
It is a National Shame that no steps were being taken for preventing suicides in young children
The PIL carried an annexure which revealed the data as per RTI response obtained from Delhi police. Bansal also drew attention to the bench that if such young kids were committing suicide in the national capital, there is a need to introspect whether this is a good sign for the country as a whole. He also called the present situation “shameful” for the authorities.
