Coronavirus lockdown for nearly 2-months in India has resulted into job losses running into thousands. This number is said to rise and unemployment could impact millions of bread winners in the coming future. While we are having strong debates and campaigns around domestic abuse on women (read wives), we do not even acknowledge murders of husbands as an extreme form of domestic violence.
Boisar woman was arrested for allegedly killing her husband who was jobless following country’s lockdown guidelines. Arun Maurya (29) worked as a technician at a factory in Goregaon in Mumbai. On May 18, his health deteriorated and he vomited blood.
His wife Kavita (22) called the neighbours who took him to the hospital, however Arun did not survive. Boisar MIDC police registered an accidental case after Kavita told them that he was unwell for some days. But the autopsy report revealed he had died of injuries on his abdomen. Shockingly when police seized Arun’s cellphone, they found video clips of the wife assaulting Arun since May 14.
Kavita used to torture him mentally for being jobless and accused him of having extra-marital affairs. Arun kept his phone video on and left it on the window on May 14. Kavita’s assaults since then, including on May 18, when he died, were all recorded.
In another case reported from Delhi last month, a 30-year-old woman and her lover were arrested for allegedly killing her husband. Initially the wife of the deceased tried to rush off the cremation formalities terming the same as death due to COVID, however, the police was alerted by neighbours who then investigated the entire matter in detail.
