Often we blame the police for not providing timeline assistance or being rude or unfair to some of us. However, while different people may have various stories of their encounter with the men in uniform, Mumbai Police wins our hearts yet again with the below incident.

Timely action by Mumbai Police Department prevented a 39-year-old man from committing suicide in Mumbai. On February 2, Nilesh Bedekar a resident of Goregaon in Mumbai had tweeted at around 3:40 pm stating that he felt like ending his life. The tweet read:

Mumbai Police I am thinking of committing suicide. I just wanted to know what would be the punishment for that. I tried Wikipedia and Google but didn’t get anything so asking you.” Mumbai Police twitter handle responded to Bedekar’s tweet and tried dissuading him from taking any extreme step.

@MumbaiPolice I am thinking of committing suicide. I just wanted to know what would be the punishment for that. I tried Wikipedia and Google but didn’t get anything so asking you.

— Nilesh Bedekar (@bedekarnilesh) February 2, 2020

Within a few minutes, responding to his tweet, Mumbai Police also replied,

Hello Nilesh, Problems are part and parcel of life. Opting for extreme step isn’t solution. We request you to allow Vanrai police personnel to intervene & provide you with necessary assistance.

Maharashtra police handle too prompted replied,

Sir, how can we help you? Please do not consider any extreme steps and allow @MumbaiPolice to step in and understand how you can be helped.

— Maharashtra Police (@DGPMaharashtra) February 2, 2020

Constable Sameer Salve who was on duty handling the Mumbai Police’s twitter account asked Bedekar to share his details like mobile number and address.

We have followed you. Please DM us your contact details.

— Mumbai Police (@MumbaiPolice) February 2, 2020

It is then Nilesh shared his contact number with the officials and without wasting any time, Salve passed on the details immediately with the main control room and the Vanrai police station in Goregaon, Mumbai.

Police Inspector Mahesh Nivetkar on duty at the police station rushed to Bedekar’s residence and spoke to him. At the police station, Nivetkar further counselled Bedekar and made him realise that ending his life would not help solve his problems. Bedekar was then dropped back home. Police officials also spoke to his family members.

After this incident, Nilesh also posted the below messages from his account.

Nivatkar told Mid-Day,

As he was thinking of committing suicide, all the officers requested him to sit with us for a while. I personally counselled him for three hours and he finally seemed convinced.

Nilesh’s twitter bio now reads as below!

Yes, we totally agree one cannot really understand what another person is going through, when he feels like taking the extreme step. However, we must realise the irreversible pain we would leave behind for our loved ones.

Some of us would have had gone through the worst situations in life, but after many years when we come out of those testing times, we emerge as a winner in our own right. Life is not about few ugly moments, but those endless memories which we carry forward and reflect upon forever.
