In January this year, a very tragic incident was reported from Kerala, where a young man who was accused of domestic violence and cruelty by his wife, ended life by setting himself on fire. Not just the accused husband, but also his father died by suicide after he learnt of his son’s death.
Case:
Kalady native Anto (32) was working abroad and had returned to his home town few months ago. His wife Nia, went to her parents’ home after an alleged argument with Anto and did not return for nine months.
In the interim, Nia filed a complaint with Chengamanadu police under Section 498-A against Anto and his family alleging that they were torturing her and not protecting their children.
The police registered a case against Anto and his mother Elsy. After this, Anto set himself on fire on a road near the Sivajipuram-Thuravoor region. While he was rushed to the Angamaly hospital, he did not survive.
After learning about his son’s death, 70-year-old Antony reached his daughter-in-law’s residence and he too died by suicide on the spot.
According to police, Anto would have ended life due to mental pressure of the criminal case. As reported by New Indian Express, a police official quoted,
Issues between the couple had worsened, with Niya filing a case against him. This might have prompted Anto to kill self.
Is it time India stops criminalising matrimonial matters, unless there are specific incidents of physical violence? Has India empowered only wives, leaving the men to die due to threats and filing of alleged frivolous cases?

This is not suicide.This tragedy is double murder. Mr.Anto,was planning to migrate to Malta in the European Union for providing better life for his wife and child.Wife and her family didn’t let him see his child and wife’s father beat him up and called police, threatened to get him arrested which led Mr Anto take his life and hearing the news of son’s death,Anto’s father bought petrol, and self immolated Infront of the girl’s house.
