Prime Minister Narendra Modi met children at the Red Fort in national capital today on the occasion of India’s 73rd Independence Day.
Through his sixth consecutive address to the nation at Red Fort, PM Modi extended greetings to the people of the nation during his speech. He then unfurled the horizontal rectangular tricolour of saffron, white and green with the Ashoka Chakra at its centre, symbolising hopes and aspirations of every Indian.
During his speech on the Independence Day today, several sign language instructors moved their hands up and down as Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s addressed the nation from the historic Red Fort. Several students with disabilities cheered and smiled as they all seemed excited.
But for a portal, who is fighting for true Gender Equality, we could not miss spotting only ‘Girl Children’ that were invited or at least allowed to be surrounded near the Prime Minister. We understand how PM Modi has been striving in his endeavour to promote the welfare of girls and women in India through his #BetiBachaoBetiPadhao Campaign. However, it breaks our heart to see how the ‘boy child’ has been totally subtracted from the function.
Nearly 120 persons with disabilities, including a number of children from schools and NGOs, sat patiently in the lawns of the 17-century monument, listening to Modi’s address with help from the women instructors.
According to the officials,
The youths, aged 13-18, came from schools run by Deendayal Upadhyaya institute, and a couple of NGOs. They were really excited to be a part of the event and cheered in their own language.
Most of them who attended the celebration are speech-impaired or hearing-impaired. Some of them are autistic or have bone disorder.
We truly admire the spirit in which Prime Minister Modi engages with children, however, he must not belittle the presence of a boy child in his effort to promote the other gender. This, at least from the photo-op part of it, seemed highly unfair to our young boys.
