The trend of filing false cases or even the threat to file false cases against in-laws is extremely worrying. The fear of arrest, on the word of the wife, is not limited just for the husband but his entire family.
Three members of one household in Vijayawada committed suicide last week by consuming pesticide. The incident was reported from the Ayodhyapatnam area under Kaikalur town police station limits in Krishna district. The deceased have been identified as Vellagala Balram Krishna Reddy (60), his wife Subbulakshmi (55) and their son Gangadhar Reddy (25).
The incident reportedly took place at 2pm on Thursday when all three members decided to consume the same pesticide. The police was intimated about the deaths by locals and daughter-in-law. When the officers reached the suicide site, they found a note left behind by the deceased members. The note clearly stated,
We are taking this extreme step as we could not bear the ‘torture’ from Gangadhar’s wife
Section 498A: A complaint under the law allows for immediate arrest and jailing of the accused, often the husband and his family members, but several cases reported on a daily basis, suggest the provision is frequently misused with many women filing false cases. The tough anti-dowry law was made with noble intentions to protect the women, however, the misuse of the same has also taken many lives.
