Another suicide has been reported where a middle-aged man has ended his life after being named in an alleged harassment case. The case pertains to the Assam Agricultural University at Jorhat where a reputed professor was accused by a girl student after he asked her ‘to focus on her studies’.
Dr. Abhijit Sarma (50), a professor of Assam Agricultural University, died of suicide on Tuesday by hanging himself from a ceiling fan of his office on Tuesday morning. The deceased who lived in the university campus, is survived by his wife, also working at AAU as a junior scientist, and a daughter who is in her tenth grade. A suicide note was recovered from the body and investigation had been underway.
On a complaint of mental torture of an MSc student for over a year by the professor, he was transferred to the Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Titabor on Monday. This matter was also under investigation.

According to reports, the AAU registrar said that the employee was found hanging from a ceiling fan around 8.30 am on Tuesday. Jatin Choudhary, HoD, agronomy department at AAU, said that the professor was the guide for an MSc fourth semester girl. She had submitted a written complaint before him and the director of PG studies alleging mental harassment by Sarma for one and a half years. She also sought a change of Sarma as her guide.
Following this, Sarma asked a fellow colleague to take over his role as the girl’s adviser, and on Monday he was transferred, said reports.
As per the investigation in the death case, Sarma had reportedly mentioned the names of several persons in his suicide note. Dr. Sarma also mentioned the name of a female student in the suicide note he left in his office at the department of Agrnomy.
Jorhat superintendent of police (SP) Mrinal Talukdar informed media that everyone found in the note would come under the ambit of investigation.
According to sources, Professor Sarma was an extremely serious academician. He was the guide of the female student who is undertaking her post-graduation. He reportedly urged the student to focus seriously on studies. However, the girl lodged a complaint of harassment against Dr. Sarma. Following the complaint, the university authority ordered transfer of Sarma to Rice Research Station at Titabor. Sources revealed that the professor was anguished with the university’s decision.

On the other hand, Dean of Assam Agricultural University Dr. Jayanta Deka said that as a teacher Abhijit Sarma was immensely popular and was not involved in any immoral activities. He expressed hope of a proper investigation into Sarma’s death.
