A 30-year-old Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan shot himself with his service rifle on Sunday in Bhamragadh taluka of Gadchiroli, Maharashtra. The police has identified him as an Uttarakhand-resident Deepak Kumar attached to the force’s battalion number 37.
He shot himself in the chest with his Insas rifle at around 2:30pm. A suicide note found at the spot cited health and family issues as triggers.
In October 2018, a CRPF jawan committed suicide by shooting himself in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district. Constable Kuldeep Singh from CRPF’s 2nd battalion shot himself with his service rifle early in the morning in the battalion’s headquarters located at a distance of 500 km from Raipur, the capital of Chhattisgarh. His colleagues rushed to the spot the moment they heard the gunshot only to find his body lying in a pool of blood.
They immediately rushed him to a local hospital, after examining him the doctors declared him dead. Soon, his family members were informed about the incident. He worked in a premise which was engulfed by Naxalites. Although no suicide note was found nearby him speculations were rife that he committed suicide due to family-related issues.
In September in the same year, two other CRPF jawans had committed suicide by shooting themselves with service revolvers at around 1 am inside their Chhattisgarh camp. As per one of the reports, around 228 CRPF jawans have committed suicide in the past seven years (until 2018), as a result of which Yoga has been made compulsory for all the CRPF and paramilitary forces.
The reasons behind most of these suicides include family issues like personal enmity, marital discord, mental illness and depression.
Several men in uniform commit suicide every year, due to pressures from work often aggravated by domestic problems. However, such lives ended are merely attributed to the ‘weakness’ of men rather than ascertaining family disputes with spouse or someone else. Often, we as a society would fail to acknowledge the marital problems a husband might be undergoing and such suicides are only reduced to yet another number.
