India’s premier fast bowler, Mohammed Shami, has finally opened up on the darkest phase of his life when he tried to commit suicide thrice. Shami was having an informal instagram chat with fellow teammate Rohit Sharma on Saturday, when he made these confessions.
The 29-year-old recalled the injury he suffered in the 2015 Cricket World Cup, that saw him miss out on 18 months of cricket. He said,
When I got injured in the 2015 World cup, after that it took me 18 months to fully recover, that was the most painful moment in my life, it was a very stressful period.
Shami’s life turned upside down after coming back from the 2018 South African tour. His now-estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, accused Shami of domestic violence. She also involved his brother and family accusing them of an attempt to murder. Shami told Rohit,

I think if my family had not supported me back, then I would have lost my cricket. I thought of committing suicide three times during that period due to severe stress and personal problems.
Also, Shami revealed that he wanted to jump off the 24th floor of his building. He added,
I was not thinking about cricket at all. We were living on the 24th floor. They (family) were scared I might jump from the balcony. My brother supported me a lot.
Fearing Shami’s tendencies, his family and friends gave ample support to the fast bowler, by being there for him at all times. Shami quoted,
My 2-3 friends used to stay with me for 24 hours. My parents asked me to focus on cricket to recover from that phase and not think about anything else.

Shami’s wife accused him of adultery, domestic violence and match-fixing in March 2018. The pacer’s central contract was put on hold by BCCI till the investigations weren’t completed. He, however, was cleared by the board from fixing allegations and turned up for Delhi Daredevils in that year of IPL. On a personal front, it was just the beginning of a long legal battle with his wife. He further said,
Someone used to stay with me 24*7, I was not well mentally, my family was there for me, if your family is there then you can get through any situation.
If my family was not there then I might have taken a bad step, but I thank my family for being with me throughout.
News of the marital discord reached public domain couple of years ago when his wife, Hasin Jahan, took to Facebook to level multiple charges against her husband including domestic violence. Jahan, a former model, had filed a complaint against four people in Shami’s family in March 2018.
Jahan, the estranged wife of Team India pacer Mohammed Shami also lost the maintenance litigation last year after the Alipore Court refused her demands. The woman, who accused the cricketer of domestic violence and extra-marital affair demanded Rs 10 lakh per month but her claims were turned down by the court.
However, judge Neha Sharma then approved the maintenance claim for their daughter Aairah Shami which was Rs 80,000 per month. Shami’s advocate made clear the right-arm bowler was open to pay his daughter’s maintenance charge since the beginning but refused to allocate any share towards his wife after she switched back to her modelling and acting career.
Shami was last seen in action during the two-match Test series against New Zealand. The pacer would have been in action for the Kings XI Punjab if the IPL had started on March 29.
