In June this year, a 37-year-old man from Ghatkopar area of Mumbai was found dead by his family after he strangled himself in his home. The man is said to have allegedly hung himself in the house, but later succumbed to death, three days after rushing him to the hospital.
Viral Shah used to work at a Chartered accountancy firm. He was living with his parents, both of whom are doctors, and his wife, at their plush Tilak Nagar residence. Wife works in a multinational company. On the morning of June 16, the man was found hanging, which left his family in complete shock.
According to the police, the deceased was upset over something for the last few weeks, however, the reason behind his alleged suicide was not clear. Senior inspector Nitin Alaknure explained the financial condition of the family was stable. He quoted:
The family has no financial difficulties or liabilities.
The police also said that the deceased was settled in his career and life. Alaknure said,
The man himself was doing well in his career. We are still investigating what happened on the day of the incident that could have triggered such an extreme reaction from him.
Adding further the investigating officer then said,
The family is in a state of shock, so we will wait for a couple of days to record their statements.
However, not only his family but incidentally, other people also knew the man was upset over something. As for some members of the Gujarati community, who were well acquainted with the family mentioned that the young man was distressed over the disputes within his family.
The police clarified,
Some of his family members did not get along with each other. This resulted in frequent fights over petty issues within the household.
A neighbour gave a statement,
On the morning as well, there was a fight going on in the house a few minutes before we heard an ambulance come into the society.
The body was initially taken to a hospital at Kurla and later shifted to a private hospital in Chembur. The case was reported by the Chembur-based hospital, however, it was handed over to the Ghatkopar police as the incident had occurred in the family home, said a police official.
